Review of Ring in Walnut by John Shryock

Anyone who has been in magic for a signifcant period of time would be familiar with John Shryock. He is a working pro who performs both on stage and close-up. He has also released a number of magic products/ DVDs in the past few weeks. Check out a performance on “Masters of Illusion”. It is a great presentational handling of one version of a classic illusion built by Owen Magic Supreme.

Shyrock’s latest release is an effect he has been performing for the past 15 years. A similar plot has been performed by magicians such as Paul Daniels and Steve Cohen.

This is a working pro sharing a audience proven and time-tested routine. He goes through the history and entire preparation of the routine. You will have no problem learning and experimenting with this routine. As you would expect, there is preparation involved. The preparation is extensive but not overly extensive for a routine of this nature.

The method is practical but you should know that this is not a walk-around effect but for a formal close-up show or parlour show where you can work out of a case. I think viewers will benefit from his experience performing the routine as he shares many insights and tips that can only be learnt through countless performances.

However, there were things that I did not like about the routine. I did not particularly like Shyrock’s handling for the vanish of the ring. For one, his TT was way off colour and not even close to matching. It was an ok vanish in itseld but I feel an alternative vanish would be stronger.

I also felt the pacing and dramatic structure of the routine was not right. This is just an observation and you can obviously deliver the routine as you deem fit. I felt everything was building well all the way to the point of the revelation of the ring in the walnut where he did a recap of the what had happened and made a big deal of all everything was fair. I felt this cause the suspense to dip as it was just a bit too long.

The production values of the DVD are fair but not excellent. You will still have no problem learning all elements of the routine.

Overall, it was a solid effect and handling/ method. But, personally, I was expecting a bit more. 4 out of 5 stars.
