I spent the last few days working on a brand new illusion to open “Ultimate Magic” as well as our large-scale illusion show for corporate & special events.
I’m really happy with this as it is a one-of-a kind illusion appearance that incorporates design/ choreography elements that are hardly seen in an illusion of this nature. Strong psychology, good rhythm, misdirection and clean lines make this a stunning instant appearance.
This time round for the fabrication, we will be building the entire structure from stainless steel and the entire illusion system will be automated and self-contained. There will be no one on stage when this illusion begins. The rough conceptual sketch below does not do justice to the final product but the actual prop will be ready by end April 2009.
While I originally had stated that we did not intend to add new illusions to our show this year, I guess that plan is kind of out the window. Our insatiable need to continually push ourselves, reinvent our reportoire and always offer our clients something new did not allow us to stand by our original decision.
Ning & I are also at a point in our careers where we have to ensure our illusions are original or, at the very least, unique or seldom seen. That is why, for the past 2 years, we have been doing a slow but progressive overhaul of our reportoire to replace old(common) illusions with unique ones.
It is a very expensive process that is draining on resources, time and effort but it is necessary. Our “East meets West'” style and approach to magic is very unique due to our duo approach to our performances as well as our “urban illusions in the city” style. (Albert Tam, whom I mentioned saw “Ultimate Magic” acknowledged this distinctiveness in our show. And trust me, there is unlikely anyone else who has seen more magicians across Asia than Albert .) So, it is essential that our performance material be as unique as our approach and style.
Our stage illusions include “Crystal Metamorphosis”, “Crystal Striptease”, “Light & Space”, “Revollusion”, “Cross Country Teleportation” and “Full Throttle” which are original. “Smoke Split Appearance” will be added to this short but substantial list.
We also have taken existing illusions from other designers/builders and created radicially different presentations from what was originally intended. These include our interpretations of such illusions as “Extreme Burn”, “Spiker”, “3 Inch Hole”, “Thru Steel” and “Dreamscape: The Realm of the Sandman”. We are also possibly hoping to add another surreal dividing illusion in the very near future.
Beyond the stage, we have strived to ensure our mega illusions are truly first of their kind. “The Impossible Teleportation” was the world’s first live 50-storey teleportation. “The Impalement Cage” was the region’s first full-view escape from a cage of spikes. And “The Impossible Journey” was the world’s first teleportation of 3 spectators across a river.
We are currently working on new mega illusion projects in 2009, many currently in the planning and budgeting stages. We guarantee that these will be truly unique spectacles once again.
Look out for all this and more real soon!
